Gamifying gut health through plant diversity tracking
Overview
Research shows that people who eat at least 30 different plant-based foods per week have significantly more diverse gut microbiomes — linked to stronger immunity, better mental health, and reduced risk of chronic disease. But tracking plant diversity is tedious, and existing apps treat it like a spreadsheet.
Plant Points reimagines gut health tracking as a cozy, gamified experience. Inspired by apps like Finch and Duolingo, we're designing a mobile app that makes eating diversely feel rewarding — through streaks, achievements, gentle nudges, and a warm visual language that meets users where they are.
The Why
How might we make plant diversity tracking feel less like a chore and more like a game — encouraging long-term habit formation through delight rather than discipline?
The gut microbiome plays a critical role in everything from immune function to mental health. Diet is one of the most powerful levers we have — yet most people don't know where to start, and existing tools make the process clinical rather than inviting. We saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between nutritional science and everyday behavior through thoughtful design.
Visual Direction
The brand palette draws from the natural warmth of fruits, vegetables, and earth — coral, peach, olive, and mustard tones that feel cozy and approachable rather than clinical. The moodboard below captures the visual energy we're drawing from — plant-forward imagery, retro illustration, and earthy textures that ground the experience in warmth and playfulness.

Early Explorations
Low-fidelity wireframes exploring the core tracking flow — categorized plant entry, a searchable database, and a save-and-log interaction pattern designed for speed and ease.
